Six Simple Ways To Get Intentional About Your Scalp Health

How much attention do you pay to the health of your scalp?

We hear so many of our clients talk about the condition of their hair, but it’s rare that any of our clients ever acknowledge their scalp health. Ultimately, when we don’t care for our scalp it results in build-up that almost always blocks hair follicles, negatively impacting the our hair hair growth. Normal growth comes from a happy, healthy scalp!

Here are six very simple ways to get intentional about caring for your scalp.

1. Avoid Product Build-Up

Product build-up can easily lead to clogged follicles. When this happens, the scalp stops its natural sebum, resulting in dryness. Here are some common factors that lead to build-up:

  • Products made with harsh chemicals & low quality ingredients
  • Silicones, petroleum, mineral oil or polyquats
  • Natural ingredients (even coconut oil)
  • Hard water which contains calcium, magnesium, bicarbonates & sulfates

Hard water is a huge issue across the UAE, but we have some incredible products that help to combat the build-up impact that hard water causes…

2. Water Your Roots

Don’t let your roots become too thirsty, too often. Here are a few hydrating practices to keep your scalp happy and healthy:

  • Spritz your scalp with water in between washes & before applying styling products
  • Install a shower filter to avoid the hard water coming from taps in the UAE
  • Use warm, not hot, water when washing your hair to prevent scalp damage

3. Avoid Stripping Shampoos

We suggest making sure you are using a ‘sulfate free’ shampoo that ensures hydration and protection. If you use a purifying or clarifying shampoo, use one with a milder detergent and leave it to every couple weeks, with your regular shampoo being used in between.

4. Be Careful With Heat Sources

Too much heat, from direct heat sources like blow dryers and straighteners, can start to cause parched skin cells on your scalp to flake. Avoid letting too much heat near your scalp by using heat products sparingly, holding your appliances an inch away from your scalp and pointing your blow dryer downwards on your hair.

5. Be Mindful Of What You Eat & Drink

The wrong food, drinks and medications can be destructive to your scalp’s health. But an easy changeover to foods full of vitamins and nutrients will have a brilliant impact on your scalp, hair and skin.

Here are our top picks to keep your body healthy, inside and out:

  • Water – lots of it!
  • Berries
  • Spinach
  • Avocados
  • Nuts and seeds

6. Use Products That Will Love Your Scalp Through Sun & Chlorine Exposure

Do you change your products and hair care routine over the summer, or in the UAE’s case…anytime you are out in sun or the pool for prolonged periods of time which can be all year round. The weather changes, so why shouldn’t we be changing up our products to ensure proper protection of our scalp and hair? Your scalp will thank you for it in the long run.

Here are just a few types of scalp and hair conditions and what we suggest using to give your scalp the love it needs.

Do You Suffer From An Oily Scalp With Dandruff?

This is an ‘inflammatory scalp condition in which your body is overproducing skin cells in a particular area of the scalp and overproducing sebum (natural oils), which creates a compounded scalp flaking’. (-William Gaunitz, Trichologist)
