How To Get More ‘Good Curly Days’
If you’re a curly girl, we know just how challenging the day-to-day maintenance of your natural locks can be. You may get all the compliments under the sun on how gorgeous your curls are, but what those well-wishers don’t realize is just how time consuming it is to keep your curls looking and feeling their best.
If ‘dry’, ‘coarse’, ‘frizzy’ and ‘unmanageable’ are becoming a daily part of your vocabulary, you need the checklist below to make sure that your crown is getting all the love and care it deserves – in a way that is not driving you absolutely crazy.
Here are our curly hair care hacks that you can start today and keep going easily…
Curly Hair Hack #1 – The Great Shampoo Debate
There are curly hair goddesses out there that would advise not to shampoo, but our advice is to shampoo WISELY! Irregardless of your hair’s texture, shampooing is an important part of your hair routine. Especially for those of us living in the UAE, shampooing is a vital part of your hair care due to the weather and water conditions. In other parts of the world, not shampooing might work well…but not here ladies! You have to be able to remove environmental pollutants and excess oil, and gentle shampooing is the best way to do just that.
Since curly hair dries out really easily, you will need to avoid excessive shampooing. When you do shampoo, be sure that you are using an ultra gentle cleanser (this means no sulfates and no chemicals) specifically created for naturally curly or wavy hair. This hero shampoo will need to be rid of all chemical nasties (you know what they are) and inject moisture without weighing down your hair.
We have a range of shampoos formulated for curlies. Explore them here.
TOP TIP – If you are a gym lover and need more frequent cleansing, try washing with conditioner only in between shampoo days.
Curly Hair Hack #2 – Brush Correctly!
Not all hair is created equally, and curly hair is no exception. And for that reason, now all brushes are ‘one size fits all’. Curlies…we recommend using a special brush designed to brush through your wet curls in a safe and healthy way. Here is the wet hair brush we suggest using. If brushing on dry hair, try a wide-tooth comb.
Curly Hair Hack #3 – In Satin We Trust
Curly girls – did you know that cotton naturally soaks up your hair’s natural sebum, depleting your curls of the moisture is really needs? This is why protecting your hair during sleep is super crucial. Try a satin bonnet which will keep your hairstyle protected and your hair’s condition healthy all through the night. Don’t stop there….add satin scrunchies and pillow cases for the ultimate forms of curly hair protection.
Curly hair Hack #4 – Watch The Heat
No curly girl wants dull, lifeless spirals. The reality is that moderate to high heat directly contributes to removing your curl’s texture which is far from ideal. To keep your curls naturally beautiful, seriously limit exposure to heat and add a good heat protectant into your routine for whenever heat is being applied.
Curly Hair Hack #5 – Cold Water Rinses
Did you know that hot water strips sebum and also opens up your hair’s cuticle, which increases the chance of frizziness and breakage. The warm water might feel good, but it’s far from great from your curly locks. Whether shampooing or conditioning, be sure to rinse with cold water!
